On page 92, Joetta asks Byron, "Byron, why won't you behave? Why won't you think about what's going to happen to you when you do something wrong? Why do you always do stuff to get people mad at you?" Byron doesn't have time to answer because Dad walks in the door?
What about you? Why do you think Byron acts this way? Why does anybody do stuff that will get them in trouble? Do you have any solutions that could improve Byron's behavior?

  1. I think that Byron acts this way because of his role model, Buphead. Buphead is not a very good person. He is always teaching Byron things like how to survive a blizzard or picking on all the younger kids at their school. I think that Byron does things like that, that he knows he is going to get in trouble for because they make him look tough and cool. He thinks that sense he is the oldest that he can me the leader and can rule the school. He does it because he likes to do it. He likes to see the other kids in those horrifying moments. I think that a solution that can help Byron is that he should spend about two whole years with grandma sands. This will improve on his behavior part and what other people think of him.

  2. I think people (Byron) in particular, act the way they do because they are looking up to a bad role model. In Byron's case Buphead. Also, I think that people get into trouble and do the things they do because they want to get attention, or seem big, tough, and cool. I think that a solution to help Byron's trouble making ways is to of course, send him to Grandma Sands. Or, for him to get a proper punishment every-time he does something extremely bad (which is a lot). This will show him that everything he does has a consequence.

  3. I think that Byron acts this way because he has his friend Buphead that is bad also and so Byron follows along with him. I think he acts this way also because he always wants to be Mr. Cool Daddy and he thinks that if he's a "Bad Boy" everyone will think he is cool and super awesome. I think the solution would be to stay at grandma sands which he already is. I also think though that it might not help him because in the last chapter we read he was being super polite to grandma but then when he got around Kenny again he was acting like himself.

  4. I think Byron acts this way because of Buphead like Ava said. Buphead is always coming up with stupid mean ideas that usually involve trying to get someone hurt. I think a solution is to send Buphead away and Byron away to different states, each with their own "Grandma Sands" that will push them to be a better person.

  5. I mostly think Byron acts as a bully so he is not bullied. He believes that if he doesnt tower above everyone as a bad boy, he will end up picked on like Kenny. I also think he acts this way just to be cool. Byron thinks that being a trouble maker will benefit him.

  6. I think Byron acts this way because he is angry. I can see that Kenny can easily tease him. Maybe other people tease him that the book doesn't tell. I think he is angry and spreads it on other people.

  7. I think Byron acts this way because of his influence, "Buphead." I think that he is influenced by him because, he teaches him to pick on younger kids and "How to Survive a Blizzard." I think that the best solution is just to take him to "Grandma Sands" (like they are.) Because, Grandma Sands is strict and there is no Buphead to get him into trouble.

  8. I think Byron acts the way he does because of the way other people see him. He is the oldest kid at Clark, so the younger kids are all afraid of him. Plus, Buphead does the same things he does, and this clearly makes an impression on Byron. I also think maybe he wants to get a message across, that he’s his own person, and no one can boss him around. That could be why no matter what Mr. and Mrs. Watson or any of his teachers do or say, he won’t change. He’s that kind of stubborn, and at the same time, I think he cares more than anyone else in the book what people think of him.

  9. I think that Byron acts this way because his friend Buphead tells him what to do, and he does it. For example when Byron used the chemicals to straighten his hair, it was Buphead who had the idea and the one who did it to Byron. I also think he acts that way be he thinks that if he isn't always "Mr. Cool" he will get picked on because Kenny isn't that in to being that cool and Byron just doesn't want to get picked on by kids older that him

  10. I think that Byron acts like this because the thinks it is cool and Buphead does it. I think he knows it is wrong, but Bubhead tells him that he will be cool if he does whatever Buphead is convincing him to do. Sometimes people aren’t thinking at the time, so they do the wrong thing. Sometimes people don’t care that they will get into trouble. And some people just want to do something that is wrong. My solution for Byron, is to not say anything unless it is nice. Also, I think he should make his own decisions, and not do what Buphead is doing. He should maybe try thinking about what might happen to him after, or decide if he would like it if someone older than him would bully him.

  11. Byron is obviously not the youngest not the youngest of the Watson bunch which must be hard. I think Byron just wants to get noticed by his parents, but when you're the oldest it isn't that easy to get noticed, especially when you have a little sister as cute as Joey. Byron thinks that the only way to get noticed by his parents to be bad,but he is wrong. If he did something good for a change, maybe his parents would notice.

  12. I think people do this because they are insecure in some way. This does not seem like the case for Byron though. It seems like at first Byron thought Buphead was cool and wanted to be like him and know that is just his personality. I also think it could be because of his family his parents seem to be awesome so maybe he is tired of his parents like that so he acts the opposite. I don’t know what a solution would be other than what they are doing.

  13. I think that Byron does that stuff he does because he doesn't feel like people understand him. I think that he does the stuff he does for two reasons. First, I think that he behaves like that to get attention, he wants people to appreciate him. Secondly, I think that he does that stuff because he is a teenager. He thinks that he doesn't have to listen to people, he doesn't even have to listen to his parents. I think that he just needs to get out of the stage he is in and then he will behave.

  14. I think Byron acts this way because he feels bad about himself. Maybe it is something at school, of maybe he has a secret that nobody knows. I think that he should start sharing more of his feeling, and then he probably would feel better and stop doing some of these things. What’s the worst that could happen if he shares how he feels? Truly nothing. Mamma won’t be mad, and neither would Dad. In 1963, there's not nothing else bad Byron could have done. In conclusion, I think Byron should start sharing more of his feelings.

  15. I think Byron acts this way because Byron thinks it would make him look tough and cool to Buphead. I also think he really likes Buphead and doesn't want to break apart from him. Everything that Byron does technically comes from Buphead, like his new hair. A good solution I think would to do stuff he doesn't like. Mom and Dad could make him go to summer school or something like that.

  16. I think Byron acts this way because he just wants to be cool. For example, when he got his hair straitened, he did it because Buphead had his hair straitened. A solution that would help improve Byron's behavior is to act like you don't care, and they will realize that it is not bugging you, so maybe they will stop doing things that annoy you. People do things that will get them in trouble because they like attention, even if it is negative. They don't care what they do, as long as they get your attention, which seems like an unreasonable thing to everyone else, but to them it is not.

    1. It is so true that some people crave attention so much that they act negatively to get it. Kenny is a great reader and Joey is the baby girl of the family. By has built a reputation as the family trouble maker and it's probably hard for him to stop. I think his parents should try to encourage him in something positive that he is good at and interests him.

  17. I think Byron acts this way because for two reasons. First, he thinks it’s cool. He even has the nickname "Daddy-Cool". Next, he is a bully. Byron and Buphead go around and bully others that makes Byron a trouble maker. That's why Byron behaves bad.

  18. Psychologically, I believe that Byron feels inferior compareed to those around him. When he feels that way, he puts others down to make himself feel better about himself. His method of doing so requires him to physically injure some people. He also may be going through that phase where kids don't feel comfortable in their own skin, so they try to alter their appearances. Byron did that with his hair. Sometimes I feel a bit insecure and I always manage to make myself feel better by just accepting who I am. Maybe Byron could try it. I don't think that the best solution to problems is to change something about your appearance, just something mentally. Attitude helps a lot.

  19. I think Byron acts this way because his friend Buphead is bad too and he makes Byron do this stuff that gets him in trouble. I think it is a good idea to send him to Grandma Sands because there is no Buphead there but I don't think his family really wants him to be there he just needs to behave.

  20. I think Byron acts this way because he wants to. But most other people act that way because they are poor or have been bullied. How I would stop this is let him do it until someone calls the cops on him and is sent to jail.

  21. I think that Byron acts this way because of Buphead. I think Bubhead is By's role model and he wants to do everything that Buphead does. I think that By just wants to be cool, so he is being a bully, just like Buphead. Buphead is influencing him, but untimely being a bully is By's decision. A solution to By's behavior issues is to stop trying to act so cool. If he would just ignore Buphead, I don't thing he would be a bully and always get in so much trouble.

  22. I think Byron acts this way because he thinks that he has to be tough to be cool. Byron's friend Buphead is that kind of person who does bad stuff to be cool. I think Buphead is influencing Byron in a bad way. If Buphead was not Byron's friend I do not think Byron would be so bad. Also I think Byron acts so mean because he is scared. Sometimes people do bad things because they are scared to do good. My solution to fix Byron’s problem is to choose wiser when choosing friends and to have courage to do good.

  23. I think that Byron acts the way he does because he is trying to stay cool and looked up to, and also wants to maintain his friendship with Buphead. I think that he feels like if he stops being cool, then Buphead won't like him anymore, and he would lose his position of power. I also think that he thinks that his parents make restricting rules, so he pushes the envelope against them to get satisfaction.

  24. I think Byron acts this way because he wants attention and wants to be popular. Byron is always being mean when a lot of people are around, and when people start laughing or encouraging him he starts to think it is ok and keeps doing it. If Byron would stop hanging out with Buphead and start being good he would get people like Joetta who would want to look up to hm and be him. My solution is that Byron would stop getting influenced by Buphead, and then maybe he would have Mom and Dad start to trust him more, and maybe Joetta would start to look up to him.

  25. I think Byron acts this way because he wants attention. Also, Buphead is not a good friend to have, because together, they think they are very cool. Byron and Buphead feed off of each other's behaviors, causing them to feel stronger. I think everyone who acts this way wants attention from others. Byron thinks he doesn't have to listen to his parents or anyone else. I think a good solution to fix his behavior is for his parents to help him find something that boosts his self-confidence, something he is good at. Then he wouldn't have to pretend to have self-confidence.

  26. I think he acts this way because he is trying to make a good impression of himself on Buphead. He could try to make an GOOD impression a different way like not disobeying his parents at home and doing something very cool at school, maybe?

  27. I think that Byron acts this way because, he wants attention and to be cool. He wants attention because, he wants to be popular and get noticed a lot. He wants to be cool because, he wants to grow up fast. I think he wants to grow up fast because, he doesn’t like the way people treat him as a kid.

  28. I think Byron acts this way because of Buphead. Buphead is a really bad influence on him because he has taught By:
    Maytag Washes
    Blizzard Survival
    Fighting
I think that what Mom and Dad are doing is a pretty good solution to the problem and I do not really have a better one.

  29. I think that By acts this way because he wants to be “top dog”. Earlier in the book it states that By is the school’s “god”. I think that By is always getting in trouble so that he can keep that position. As By says it he can’t lay low because if he does all of the other kids are going to start trying to take over his spot. By does stuff that gets him in trouble to show the other kids that he doesn’t care. He wants them to know that no matter how many times he goes to the office or has to shave his head that he won’t stop bullying people. By should probably change his behavior. I think that By could change his behavior by being a nice “god”. Instead of punching people and playing “carp” with them he could help kids who are getting bullied. When kids see By being nice they might stop being bullies and turn into nice kids as well.
